Yesterday David and I attended a baptism class so that Lucy can be baptized soon. The man leading the class (it was just the two of us in it) asked us if we knew about Saint Lucy. We did not. He said we needed to find out about her and how wonderful she was. After class, I said to David - "Is there really a Saint Lucy?" David: "Of course. There's a saint pretty much for everyone." Me: "Even a Saint Princess or Saint Gaslein?" David: "Who are they? Are those real names?" Me: "Yes - Leah had them in kindergarten!"
Anyway, we were watching an episode of Nurse Jackie last night and Jackie's daughter Grace (who just started Catholic school) fills her folks in on Saint Lucy. She had her eyes plucked out. Wha what? Okay, so now we've got to find out more about her! That was just too freaky to be told to find out about Saint Lucy and then to have the TV show we are watching bring it up.
So...Saint Lucy is the patron saint of the blind. Her mother had set it up for Lucy to marry a pagan but Lucy vowed her life to Christ. The angry bridegroom turned her in as a Christian to the governor, and the guards who came to get her could not move her so they took her eyes out with a fork. This was during the Diocletianic persecution - the last and most severe persecution of Christians.
